There are many Krakow attractions that you will likely plan to see during your vacation in Poland. A trip to Poland would not be complete without a visit to the Auschwitz – Birkenau concentration camp. Even though it was a dark, tragic time in Polish history, the events represented here are as fascinating as they are shocking. The death camps are located in Oswiecim, which is about 50km west of Krakow. Visiting the camp and seeing the tragic events that took place there is a moving experience. After visiting Auschwitz, make sure that you visit the Oskar Schindler Factory in Krakow. After hearing about the horrors that took place there, it is nice to hear about how one man tried to help those that he could during a time when repression and genocide were prevalent in Krakow. When visiting Krakow Poland, you really must make time to visit Zamek Krolewski otherwise known as the Royal Castle. The structure dates back to the early 16th century. King Sigismund the Old hired Italian artists to design and build his castle, which was nearly destroyed by fire near the end of the 16th century. You can still see parts of the Renaissance castle such as the arcaded courtyard. In the 17th century, the castle was nearly destroyed during the Swedish wars but in 1905, a Policy society bought the castle and began to restore it. The Royal Castle was again almost destroyed in 1945 by the Nazis but managed to, once again, remain mostly intact. Continue reading
